Julian Casablancas has got cracking on new songs

The Strokes' frontman Julian Cassablancas and bassist Nick Valensi have started writing new material for their band's forthcoming new album, which they are set to start work on next month.

Drummer Fabrizio Moretti, speaking after a gig with his side-project Little Joy, told BBC 6music that although the band members had not finalised plans for their fourth LP's recording, the songwriting process had begun.

"Julian has started writing and Nick has got some material as well," he said. "We're the kind of band that it's not finished until everyone's in one room and everyone's got their parts perfectly. We're a very mechanical band."

NME.COM had previously revealed that the band would reconvene in February for album sessions. "I don't think it's a reunion," Moretti said, "we're constantly in each other's lives."

The band's last album was 'First Impressions Of Earth', released in January 2006.

just dropping a line to stay in touch and update you on some news...

i'll start with the BIG NEWS....

after a long and much needed hibernation period that saw many of the band's various other musical projects emerge, we're pleased to announce that The Strokes are now all back hard at work in their NYC space on writing and rehearsing new material for a 4th full-length album, the first since 2006's "First Impressions of Earth".

no recording studio time has been booked yet, as they sketch out the blue-prints of new songs and fine tune plans in their rehearsal space, but it will undoubtedly be all mapped out and etched in stone at some point in the not-too-distant future. i wish i could tell you that this DEFINITELY meant we can expect an album release date before the end of 2009, but it's just too soon to speculate on that for sure yet. one way or another.... suffice to say, the work has begun!"

If you were holding your breath waiting for another Strokes album, you're probably dead already. But you can stop now. Practically every member of the band has some sort of non-Strokes project going on. Albert Hammond, Jr. has a solo career. Fabrizio Moretti has Little Joy. Nikolai Fraiture has Nickel Eye.

And now the big one: Frontman Julian Casablancas has recorded a solo album. Phrazes for the Young, Casablancas' curiously titled solo debut, is due this fall from Casablancas' own Cult Records via RCA in the U.S. and Europe and Rough Trade in the UK.

According to a press release, Casablancas recorded the eight-song album over the past year in New York, Los Angeles, and Nebraska. Jason Lader served as producer, and Bright Eyes/Monsters of Folk dude Mike Mogis contributes additional production. Song titles include "River of Brake Lights", "Glass", and the very NYC-sounding "Ludlow St.".

Casablancas also has a website, but right now its only content is a minute-and-a-half YouTube video filled with disconnected images: a windswept plain, a hive of bees, a futuristic cityscape, Casablancas grabbing a microphone. The soundtrack is a sun-dazed synth epic that actually reminds me of J Dilla, or maybe Ratatat. Weird! Check it out below.

Casablancas plans to play a few U.S. shows, followed by an actual tour later in the year. He hasn't announced any dates yet.
In related news, that first Strokes album sounded pretty amazing over the Fourth of July weekend. Barbecue soundtracks don't come much better.
